SLS Soccer Season comes to a close at the Sectional Semifinals.

The St. Lawrence soccer team looked stronger than ever, building off of last year’s advancement to the semifinal sectional game. Throughout the season the team showed great talent on both ends of the field as they dominated the conference, and were crowned Conference Champions for the second year in a row. Excitement was all around the team success as they were 17-3-1 as they went off to face conference rivals Winnebago Lutheran Academy for a chance at state.

The two teams have had quite the competitive rivalry these last few years. Last year WLA was able to eliminate the Hilltoppers in the semifinal sectional game 2-1. This year the rivalry only grew as they met to play twice during the regular season. Their first encounter ended in a 1-1 tie and in their second encounter SLS was able to come away with a 3-1 victory.

For the second year in a row St. Lawrence had to face Winnebago Lutheran Academy to advance to the sectional final. Tension and excitement were high all around campus. But for the second year in a row WLA was able to stop us, defeating us 3-1.

Coach Dave Bartel commented, “Congratulations to Coach Haag and Winnebago on a great game.  They scored early and kept us on our heels.  We kept attacking, but could not break through their defense and when we made a mistake they capitalized.  We had a good year and it is always hard to lose that last game”.

Though a tough loss two years in a row there was a lot of positives to take from this season: we ended with a 17-4-1 record, were conference champions two years in a row, went to the sectional semifinals two years in a row, and the team is still relatively young, as we have a lot of young talent moving up in our program. We look forward to next season as we set our goals to make it past the sectional semifinals!
