Athletics are an important part of life at St. Lawrence. All students are encouraged to participate in the interscholastic programs that are available on campus. Many students who would not have an opportunity to participate in sports programs in larger schools find that they have talents that they were unaware of or unable to foster earlier. Everyone has a chance to compete for a place in the sports programs at St. Lawrence whether it is as a player, statistician, videographer, trainer, or manager. Look below for more information on our Athletic programs.
Baseball is a spring sport, played from March through May. The school competes at both the varsity and the junior varsity level. The varsity team may include students from any grade, while the junior varsity is made up of freshmen and sophomores. The St. Lawrence baseball teams practice and play their home games off campus in the village of Mt. Calvary. Players spend their time during the early days of spring practicing indoors hitting tennis balls, batting from tees and working on their fundamentals. As soon as the weather allows, the team moves outdoors to start the interscholastic competition.
Basketball is a winter sport, played from November through February. The seminary has two teams: varsity and junior varsity. Students in any grade are eligible for the varsity level. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors may compete on the junior varsity team.
As with all athletic teams on campus, the basketball teams can be found daily practicing in the gymnasium. A full schedule of games keeps the coaches and players busy during the winter months. Most of the schools we compete with are within an hour’s drive from our campus. Home games are always well attended, and St. Lawrence students have a long tradition of being lively fans. During home games, the “Canteen Crew” sponsors half-time entertainment, and our pep band is one of the best around! Come join us for a game and cheer the “Hilltoppers on the Hardwood!”
Cross country is a fall sport, running from August through October. St. Lawrence Seminary High School has both varsity and junior varsity teams. Students in any grade are eligible to participate on either level. The cross-country team benefits from the many geographical features of the terrain on the school grounds and in the local area to help in the daily training for competition. Over the years, the Cross Country team has set and held many impressive records, been to numerous state tournaments, and won a variety of awards, including division championships and some conference titles. While the cross country team is often on the road to compete with other schools throughout the area, each season St. Lawrence Seminary High School hosts one major tournament, which is a showcase event for many cross country runners throughout Wisconsin.
The Hilltopper Invitational is held every year in mid-September. Close to 500 runners gather to tackle the school’s grueling course of hills and steep inclines. Many runners can be seen struggling to make it to the top of “Big Bertha,” the main hill that connects the upper campus to the soccer fields and track below. Besides the colorful uniformed runners, many families and fans are present to witness the Hilltopper Invitational.
As part of the Hilltopper, each year St. Lawrence hosts a Fun Run for all runners to enjoy. The Fun Run at the end of the meet is open to anyone who has kept himself or herself in good enough shape to take on the well-worn path of the high school athletes. Many former high school runners come back to the Hill annually to relive some of their high school memories of the Hilltopper, including many St. Lawrence alumni.
Soccer is a fall sport, played from August through October. The school competes at both the varsity and the junior varsity levels. The varsity team may include students from any grade, while the junior varsity is made up of freshmen and sophomores.
The Hilltopper Soccer has become one of the stand-out programs in the Fond du Lac area. There is a tradition at St. Lawrence that students, whether players or fans, turn out in large numbers for home games. The games are always a great time, and the hillside makes a great venue to watch the games. It is a lively fall sport, and all students are welcome to get involved either by trying out for the team or cheering from the sideline. Visitors are always welcome to home contests!
Tennis is a relatively new sport offered at SLS. Spring of 2011, tennis went from a club status to a school recognized varsity sport. Tennis is a spring sport, played in March through May. The school competes at both the varsity and junior varsity levels in both tournament and dual competitions. The school competes in both singles and doubles competition against a number of the local schools. We look to schedule more meets as the program grows each year. Tennis provides an alternative to the traditional spring baseball and track and field sports.
Track and Field
Track and Field is a spring sport that begins in the middle of March. Students in any grade are eligible for the team; however, there are a couple events a year that are reserved for only freshmen and sophomore competitors.
As the snow melts off the hillside in the spring of the year, our runners, hurdlers, and field men begin workouts for the track season. Individual determination, hard work and guidance from the coaching staff help each athlete improve his time or distance. Track participants are divided into three groups: Field, Distance, and Sprinters. Each of the groups has their own coach. This allows for much time to be devoted to each student becoming the best at his event.
Wrestling is a winter sport occurring from November through February. The squad is composed of two teams, a varsity and a junior varsity. Students in any grade are eligible for either team.
Wrestlers on both the junior varsity and varsity teams work constantly to improve their individual skills so that they are ready to compete head-to-head with their opponents. Like all sports at St. Lawrence, while we value winning, we realize we are truly successful when, in a spirit of good sportsmanship, we combine daily work and determination to become the best we can be. Students on the wrestling team take part in weekly competitions with other schools. On Saturdays, they attend multi-school invitationals. St. Lawrence hosts one junior varsity invitational each year at the end of January or early February, the Hilltopper JV Invite. During this event, our varsity wrestlers help run the tournament, and our junior varsity wrestlers get to show their moves to the home crowd.
